With 45 years in practice, Grant has acted for the Crown, major corporates, trusts, companies and individuals. He has also undertaken a range of roles as a judicial officer, including chairing professional disciplinary tribunals, sitting as a member of immigration tribunals, and chaired and been a member of other tribunals constituted as judicial authorities. He has appeared in multiple cases in both the Privy Council in London when it was New Zealand’s highest Court, and the Supreme Court since it became New Zealand’s highest Court.
Grant has practiced as a Crown Counsel, Partner in a National Firm and Barrister during his career. His experience has included acting as counsel assisting the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification, acting for construction companies and owners in building disputes, the Crown and other parties in judicial review proceedings, insurers, professionals and their clients in professional negligence claims, and individuals in family, estate, and property disputes (regularly on a pro bono basis).
Grant is the lead author of GST in New Zealand the leading text on GST published by Thomson Reuters, and a contributor to Professor John Prebble’s text Fundamentals of Income Tax also published by Thomson Reuters. He is also the immediate past Deputy Chair of the Council of Australasian Tribunals, it is the Australian/New Zealand professional body that promotes professional standards and training for tribunals in the two countries.
